Continental Airlines and United Airlines have engaged each other in a legal tussle about the size of carry-on bags. The altercation between the two airlines stems from the approval of United and other airlines X-ray scanning machines with templates of the sizes of carry-on bags. Continental opposed the measure, having spent millions of dollars to enlarge its overhead bins aboard jets, in addition to a marketing program promoting its liberal carry-on policy.

The protracted labor negotiations between United Airlines and its mechanics have raised concerns over passenger safety. The airline is accusing mechanics of reporting an unusual number of repairs, resulting in flight delays, to force the company to come up with a more favorable contract. On the other hand, the International Assn of Machinists, claims United is using confrontational management just to gain control. The impasse between the two sides has resulted in numerous delayed or cancelled flights.
