U.S. miner sweetened last-ditch bid for Goldcorp

Glamis Gold Ltd. increased its bid for Goldcorp Inc. by 3.4 percent to $2.76-billion (U.S.) on February 7 2005, in a bid to stop a proposed merger between the owners of the rich Red Lake mine in northern Ontario and Wheaton River Minerals Ltd. The move by Glamis came three days before Goldcorp shareholders voted on Goldcorp's friendly $2.4 billion (Canadian) takeover of Vancouver-based Wheaton River, which has gold and copper assets around the world.

Rio Tinto launches hostile takeover of iron miner North

Article Abstract:

Australia's North Ltd. has received a $2.5 billion hostile takeover bid from London, England-based Rio Tinto PLC. The deal, which would allow Rio Tinto to expand in Canada's mining industry, may be rivaled by counter bids from Billiton PLC, WMC Ltd. and Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd.
