Chinese officials acknowledge that product counterfeiting is a problem, but they claim that they have just begun to take countermeasures, so US trade sanctions are unwarranted. US Trade Representative Mickey Kantor may impose punitive tariffs on Chinese goods to defend intellectual property rights.

Serbians have begun to feel the effects of the Yugoslavian civil war as long lines form for gasoline, commuters wait for buses that never arrive, and many shoppers begin to hoard food. On May 30, 1992, the United Nations imposed a trade embargo against Serbia for its attack on Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Article Abstract:

The Algerian army took control of the government on Jan 16, 1992, following the nation's first free parliamentary elections appeared to give a majority to Islamic fundamentalists. Although the fundamentalists eventually reacted in a nonviolent manner, the potential for violence remained.
