Article Abstract:

The upcoming Oct 1997 meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) is certain to be fraught with disagreements. The IWC, founded in 1946, was ineffectual until 1986, when it declared a moratorium on whaling so that populations could increase.

The perilous Iditarod

Animal rights activists charge that the Iditarod injures and even kills the dogs who run it, but supporters maintain that these accusations are exaggerated. The Humane Society opposes the race in spite of reforms to protect the dogs.

The use of subcars for local transportation is one way to curb traffic congestion. Innovative urban planning can reduce dependency on cars. Buses, car pools and van pools are more cost effective than mass transit rail projects.
