Members of the Catholic Church must engage fully with the modern world, and not hide from the complexity of the issues of abortion, family planning, and politics. Activist Robert Fitzgerald says democracy may not be appropriate for Catholicism, but open engagement with people is appropriate and corresponds to the gospels. Religion should not be a club which accepts some members and excludes others.
