Dole announced on May 15, 1996, that he is quitting the Senate and his leadership position to devote himself full-time to the presidential campaign. This move seemed to reinvigorate his campaign, and may keep him out of anticipated political battles in Congress.

Alexander won 18% of the vote in the Republican Iowa caucuses, finishing third behind Bob Dole and Pat Buchanan. Alexander, a moderate, says he is the logical choice for the nomination if Bob Dole does poorly in New Hampshire and other upcoming primaries.
