Many in Tasmania leave the country to find work and excitement in Australia. In Sep 1998, Tasmanian voters are going to choose a new government, and many predict it will bring crucial changes to its society, economy, and government. However, most voters are uninterested in politics. Recent studies show that Tasmania is moving towards losing most of its population. If this election does not bring changes, soon the country will be populated with retirees, tourists, and welfare recipients.

Article Abstract:

Peter Garrett, the band Midnight Oil's lead vocalist, chairs the Australian Conservation Foundation and is running for a seat in the Senate. He ran unsuccessfully in 1984, capturing 250,000 votes. In 1998, he contends he has a better understanding of the issues facing Australia. Garrett is also heading a campaign against the proposed Jabiluka uranium mine.

Article Abstract:

Sri Lankan elections came early due to concerns caused by the defection of 12 Peoples' Alliance politicos to the United National Party. The days leading up to the elections have been anything but calm, with bombings, threats of (and acts of) violence, intimidation, murder, and a suicide bombing adding to the general sense of chaos.
