The perils of peace

Article Abstract:

This article examines the dangers that will confront the Australian troops who will participate in the International Force East Timor (Interfet), the peacekeeping force that will attempt to restore order in East Timor. Relevant points include a comparison with the peacekeeping effort in Somalia in 1993, with the dangers posed by the hit-and-run tactics of the pro-Indonesian militias, and with the effect of Australia's participation in Interfet on relations with Indonesia.

Dangerous friends

Article Abstract:

The US seems keen to cast Australia as its deputy or 'eyes and ears' in the Indonesian region. However, this does not help Australia's relations with Indonesia, which are still weakened by Australia's 1999 role in East Timor.
