Article Abstract:

The price of rice in Indonesia has sky-rocketed. The Habibie government is subsidising rice and making efforts to import enough to feed the poor. however poor distribution system, corruption and greed and responsible for the current state. Habibie's government's efforts to overhaul the system does not seem wholly effective. There are still some suspected improprieties in the way bids are handled. Till those issues are addressed, the rice matter may continue to be a problem.

The seven Indonesian soldiers who were riding a public bus to head home for the holy month of Ramadan were taken by an angry mob, tortured, and killed. This incident in Aceh was in response to the military's brutality and interference in the country's political affairs. The army conducted a house-to-house search for those missing after the incident, but that only increased the tension and resulted in more killings of civilians.
