United Airlines has launched substantial price discounts, as much as 55% and relinquished new fuel surcharges on the discounted fares. United said the discounts supplement frequent-flier miles and other inducements given to fliers who have been displeased with the airline because of its continuing delays and flight cancellations. Discounts of 15% to 25% on international fares were given while the biggest discounts were provided on domestic flights.

Northwest Airlines Inc and its 11,000-member flight attendants union have agreed on a new five-year contract. The union would have asked federal mediators to announce an impasse that would have led to a possible strike. Under the contract, attendants would receive an immediate 13.9% pay hike and an additional 11% for the rest of the contract. Union members are required to approve the contract before implementation.
