Article Abstract:
A small group out of 16,000 US school districts have opted to begin purchasing a broad variety of supplies over the Internet. In so doing, they have taken the initial steps behind a massive trend that is expected to save the private sector $2 trillion on supplies by 2003. Schools may not be able to save the 20% that many companies claim. However, a more modest savings estimate of 10% would save money for 100,000 public schools which collectively spend roughly $84 billion annually on supplies. These savings would pay for 150,000 teachers, assuming teacher each gets paid $6,000 apiece.
