Opposition parties Bloc Quebecois and the Reform Party provide little competition for Prime Minister Jean Chretien, whose popularity as survived many controversies. Chretien is very good at dodging opposition attacks, and the neither of the opposition parties represent more than a segment of Canadian voters.

The popularity of the Liberal Party has made it difficult for opposition parties to gain power and prominence. Most of the smaller parties are also plagued by leadership problems and dissention. Parties profiled include the Bloc Quebecois, the Reform Party, the New Democratics and the Conservatives.

Canadians have embraced many of the traditional platforms of conservatives such as deficit reduction and free trade, but Canada's two conservative parties are struggling to survive. Both the Reform and the Progressive Conservative parties have organizational problems.
