Sirois takes helm at Coscient

Article Abstract:

Coscient Group Inc., an entertainment production company based in Montreal, Quebec, will have Quebec telecommunications czar, Charles Sirois, as its new chairman, while Sirois' right-hand man, Guy Crevier, will be its new president and CEO. The changes were effected after Sirois' Telesystem Ltd. became prepared to buy 20.5% of Coscient's shares on a fully diluted basis for C$18.5 million. The two executives decided to take the helm of Coscient to have a feel of the business, which they intend to expand. Investors are mostly receptive of Sirois' investment in Coscient, but some are skeptical of synergies between the two firms.

Warner Music Canada President and CEO Garry Newman is being called by music industry experts as a member of a new breed of music executives for a business that is expected to list C$1.4 billion in 1998 sales. This means that although Newman likes to have fun, he is a professional manager who prioritizes profits before parties. The newly appointed, 48-year-old executive, is a father to two children and favors oversized, round glasses, conservative golf shirts and Bette Midler's music. Newman believes the industry has become highly competitive after massive and recent consolidations.
