The Melbourne Herald's bureau chief, Joe Alexander discusses some of the secrets and the search behind HMAS Sydney, which sunk in the Indian Ocean in 1941 during which John Curtin was the prime minister. The search would concentrate on the broad area of the German survivor's reports of their ship's position in the Indian Ocean, some 140 nautical miles south-west of Carnarvon.

Sixty years ago on a remote Indonesian island, the Japanese battle fell silent when a young Australian major, Bill Thomas, accepted the surrender of an entire division of imperial troops. After their surrender the Kempeitai were subsequently found guilty of war crimes and some were executed.
