Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas resigned in frustration after a gang of Yasir Arafat attacked him during a meeting of the legislative council in Ramallah. Further reports reveal that Abbas might as well have ripped up the U.S. backed roadmap, the three-phase peace plan that was supposed to lead to the creation of a Palestinian state in two years.

The Prime Minister of Palestinian Ariel Sharon had suggested a new approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for achieving a different goal, a manageable war. The President of United States George W. Bush endorsed the broad outlines of Ariel Sharon's initiative, which declared the approach to be unrealistic.
