Retirees cite production practices

Article Abstract:

Four retired Bridgestone/Firestone workers have given testimony that described allegedly slipshod manufacturing practices that may have compromised tire quality. The workers testified in a Florida case involving a Daytona steel-belted made in 1992 at Bridgestone/Firestone's Decatur, IL, plant. Their claims have been disputed by union leaders and the company. The Decatur plant has come under intense scrutiny because it has been identified as the source of ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT tires being recalled by the manufacturer.

Hearings offer chance to vent, but little else

Article Abstract:

The hearings on the national tire problem being conducted by the US Congress failed to provide new answers for the cause of the tragic deaths on US highways. The questionings of executives from both Bridgestone/Firestone and Ford Motor Co, which began on Sep 6, 2000, failed to elicit more than the usual response since the recall of the tires began in Aug 2000. Ford stuck to its assertion that the problem is a tire issue despite the large number of Ford vehicles involved in the accidents.

Firestone puts 'best theory' forward

Article Abstract:

Firestone Tire and Rubber Co VP John Lampe announced what he called was their 'best theory' in explaining the cause of the tire disintegration problems which resulted in the recall of 6.5 million of its tires that were installed in Ford vehicles. The problem was traced to the unique design specifications of the P235/75R-15 tire and variations in the manufacturing processes at its Decatur, IL, plant.
