Red Lobster goes overboard for diners

Darden Restaurants Inc's Red Lobster brand in Oct 2000 introduced a $60- million advertising campaign with the tagline 'Go Overboard.' The advertisements use seaside footage, music and humor to show the extremes Reb Lobster takes to obtain fresh seafood. The campaign appears to be effective as shown by 5.5% increase in same-store sales for the most recent quarter, compared with the previous year. In USA Today's exclusive consumer poll, Ad Track, 23% liked the advertisements 'a lot,' reaching the survey average.

FTC investigates Microsoft ads

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp's advertisements for its Pocket PCs are under scrutiny by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for alleged deception. The print advertisements, which were released in Apr 2000, are directed against market rival Palm. The FTC is arguing that Microsoft failed to inform consumers that a number of the wireless functions being touted for the Pocket PCs need a separate modem in order to operate.

Airline investigates false crash warning

Article Abstract:

British Airways PLC passengers aboard a London-bound 747 jumbo jet were stricken with fear when a tape announcing a crash was played over the audio system. The tape was immediately turned off and flight staff apologized to shocked passengers. The airline is investigating how the recording was apparently played by a passenger as a prank. VCR tapes are used by airlines only in emergency cases.
