Rate hike seen as green light

Article Abstract:

Wall Street welcomed the Federal Reserve Board's (Fed) decision to raise interst rates by a quarter percentage point on Nov 16, 1999, but the action does not mean that the market is about to rebound strongly and take off again. First Albany investment officer Hugh Johnson opined that should bond traders continue to sell and yields increase to the 6.4% level, the stock exchange will probably experience some turbulence. Another concern traders have is the uncertainty surrounding the year 2000 computer date transition issue, which might cause many people to withdraw funds from financial institutions. Thus, the market will likely continue to be watchful for any decisions by the Fed on further interest rate hikes even if it rallies between Nov 1999 and Feb 2000.

Vietnam stock market sees slow start, steady growth

Article Abstract:

The Ho Chi Minh City Securities Trading Center, Vietnam's initial experiment with stock trading, is up by over 59% since it began trading in Jul 2000. The performance of the stock exchange, achieved despite being limited to only two hours of trading a day, three times a week, is seen by financial analysts as a significant sign of investor confidence in the stock market. The establishment of the stock exchange is part of a trade agreement signed with the US in Jul 2000.
