Conference a 'win' for biotech giants

Article Abstract:

The Global Industry Coalition, which is a trade association that represents 2,200 companies, includes Monsanto Co. Canada, which has 300 biotech firms that have a total of about $1.1 billion in 1999 sales, was the site of a signing ceremony for the 2000 Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Protests greet delegates as food biosafety talks open in Montreal

Representatives from over 130 countries will attend a conference in Montreal, Quebec to discuss ratification of the Biosafety Protocol. Negotiations over the international law on genetically engineered food products are grounded in the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity.

Organic farmers fret over spread of modified crops

Article Abstract:

The National Farmers Union, in an attempt to influence the Biosafety Protocol, has expressed concern over genetically engineered food products. Delegates from throughout the world have met in Montreal, Quebec to draft the new international law, which will have a major impact on global alliances such as the World Trade Organization.
