Pipelines: buried risks

Article Abstract:

The explosion of a 50-year-old natural gas pipeline near Pecos River, NM, is the latest in a series of pipeline accidents which have claimed more than 200 lives, caused more than 2,800 injuries and cost more than $770 million in property damage since 1990. This brings up the issue of when Congress will enact measures to tighten pipeline safety. There are more than 2 million miles of pipeline in the US that move more than 2.4 trillion tons of natural gas, oil, jet fuel, gasoline and other commodities each year. Relatively low accident rates should not be a reason for not being more strict with pipeline safety.
