Perks of power: pressure mounts for cutbacks in the benefits available to Canada's elected representatives

Article Abstract:

The $210 million operating budget of the Canadian Parliament offers legislators a wide variety of perks. The operating budgets of all Canadian legislatures since 1987 has risen 43% to $585 million. There is pressure to scale back benefits, but Parliament likely will maintain its perks.

Many Canadians believe that the politicians prefer to represent their own interests instead of those of their constituents. The declining popularity of several leading politicians has not caused others to be more popular. The political attitudes of Canadians are examined.
