Start-up takes flight to different drummer

JetBlue Airways, a passenger airline established by David Neeleman, will start operating on Feb 11, 2000. Its first flight will be between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Fort Lauderdale, FL. Neeleman, who is also the airline's CEO, says that JetBlue has all the elements needed for a start-up carrier to succeed, including new planes and experienced management. The airline's fares will also be at least 35% lower that fares of major airlines.

Strike fears force flight cancellations

Northwest cancelled 400 flights scheduled for Aug. 28, 1998, and Aug. 29, 1998, over fears of a pilots union strike. The carrier will not operate the flights even if it reaches a deal with the pilots union, which is set to strike for 12:01 a.m. ET on Aug. 29, 1998. Jon Austin, Northwest's spokesman, said around 25,000 passengers are booked on the cancelled flights. Northwest says a strike would cost it $27 million a day in lost revenue. PaineWebber airline analyst Sam Buttrick estimates that fears of a possible strike has already resulted in Northwest's loss of $75 million to $100 million.

Northwest Airlines canceled its 1,700 daily flights through Sep. 2, 1998, and flights from Europe and Asia Sep. 3, 1998, in light of a stalemate regarding a pilots strike that started on Aug. 29, 1998. The most affected areas are at Northwest hubs in Detroit, MI, Minneapolis, MN/St. Paul, MN, and Memphis, TN, as well as upper Midwestern cities that deped on Northwest such as Grand Forks, ND. Sticking points in the negotiation include a lower wage scale for new employees, profit-sharing, pay and job-security.
