Bringing an end to a six and a half-month strike at Falconbridge Ltd's (Toronto, Canada) nickel mine in Sudbury, Canada, the Canadian Auto Workers union has approved a new contract offered by the company. As part of the $Can32-mil package, Falconbridge will provide a Can$2,000 signing bonus and payment of a pension of Can$3,000 a month after 30 years of service. Wages will be increased by 50 cents an hour to Can$23.70. According to a CAW spokesperson, the strike cost Falconbridge Can$55 mil.

Balm clarified that he is not interested in assuming control of Fracmaster, an oil-field services firm.
