Lawsuit targets music swap

Article Abstract:

Indiana University blocked access to Napster.com's Web site after it was named an accessory in the lawsuit filed by rock band Metallica against the online portal. Indiana, together with Yale and University of Southern California, were sued for copyright infringement for allowing their students to swap digital music. Napster's software enables users to exchange music they have downloaded in the MP3 format in exchange for access to other's music.

BMG and Universal open e-music store

Article Abstract:

Universal Music has formed a joint venture with BMG to use the Internet for online music promotion and sales. Get-Music will offer on-line music channels and www.getmusic.com as its Web site. The joint venture will benefit Internet music buyers through the increased competition generated among online retaiers. The electronic music store faces market competition from Total E, a joint music store under Warner Music and Sony Music.

Music firm Mp3.com hits IPO high note

Article Abstract:

Mp3.com, an Internet music company, increased its estimated IPO stock price to $24 to $26 per share as it solicits strong interests from investors. This was the second time in a month that the company raised its offer price, which was originally set at $10 to $12 a share. The new price would value the company at approximately $1.73 billion, based on its 66.6 million shares outstanding after the initial trading.
