Music: Mahler's Unfinished Symphony

Article Abstract:

Mahler died while composing his tenth symphony. As Mahler's fame grew interest in performing the unfinished work and two separate movements were performed in 1924 and was completed for performance purposes by English musicologist Deryck Cooke. The resulting version has met with objections, though the power of the work and Mahler's mastery is evident.

My grandfather's last tale

Article Abstract:

Ernst Toch's life witnessed all the major events of the twentieth century and his music was integral to the modernist movement. His final opera composition, 'The Last Tale,' which was related to the stories of Scheherazade, was ultimately staged in 1995 by a German opera company.
