Microsoft's success in developing software for hand-held computers could threaten Palm Inc.'s market domination. Microsoft's third and latest version of its Pocket PC software coincides with HP, Casio and Compaq development of hand-held devices that use the MS program. Microsoft's goal is to develop hand-held devices that function as portable PCs and offer more than small, electronic organizers.

As Microsoft introduces its Windows XP, an better and faster operating system, the company is also focussing on Web services and the technology to deliver such. Microsoft's .Net software operating system will hopefully turn the Web into a computing platform. MSN service provider will offer .Net Alerts, elaborate versions of updates for PCs, pagers and cell phones. .Net MyServices will be available next year for those that want personalized Internet services. .Net platforms may have trouble easing out the industry standard that uses the Java model, which developers use.
