Online software catches on

Total sales of Web-based software, excluding service fees, has jumped to $700 million in 1999 from $100 million in 1998. Web-based software sales currently accounts for less than 1% of the software market in the US. Total Web-based sofware sales is expected to reach $5.3 billion in 2003, or 22% of the US software market. As a result, software giants are forging deals with application service providers so their products can be leased by the Web companies.

Microsoft probe grows; hand-held PCs eyed

Article Abstract:

Microsoft is being further investigated by the Justice Department, which intends to know if the software maker uses its market advantage in order to promote sales in hand-held PC market. The company is found to be offering a coupon for a free copy of Windows 98 to buyers of a palm-sized PCs with Microsoft Windows CE software. The department, along with 20 states sued Microsoft for allegedly using its monopolistic product such as Windows 95 to promote its Internet software. The Justice Department's probe into the activities of the company now covers its movements into the corporate networks, hand-held PCs and cable boxes.

Microsoft software pricing studied

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp is being investigated by government lawyers allegedly for the company's move of charging discriminatory charges for a software product dubbed Terminal Server. The product, which allows firms run Windows-based applications on any operating system or computer, was first marketed by Citrix Systems Inc of Fort Lauderdale, FL. In 1997, Citrix agreed to share the licensing of Terminal Server with Microsoft following the latter's threat to design a rival product.
