Microsoft may find a hard sell for its business-oriented Windows 2000. The company's stock fell 6% last week after the Gartner Group noted that Windows 2000 would not be compatible with many existing programs. The new operating system hopes to compete with Unix systems in corporations but must compete with Linux, a free version of Unix.

Microsoft plans an Oct. 25, 2001 delivery date for its new Windows XP operating system. The new system will have sophisticated software for Internet telephony as well as a telephone directory feature. The new software offers better voice quality and more powerful features than a regular telephone. High-tech executives are now wondering whether Microsoft is planning mergers, contracts and/or joint ventures with telecommunications companies.
