Article Abstract:
Deutsche Bank AG's merger plans with Dresdner Bank AG is seen to be improbable as the two German banks separately conduct negotiations with other banks for other consolidation options. The merger of the two bank's retail divisions would allow cost-reductions and better positioning for the banks as the EU adopts a single monetary unit. Analysts believe that a major consideration in the possible abandonment of the deal lies in the profitability of Deutsche's retail operation and the underperformance of its prospective partner.

The German Cartel Office ordered Wal-Mart Stores Inc and its German rivals, Aldi and Lidl discount supermarket chains to call off their price war on groceries. The directive came after German regulators found that the supermarkets are regularly selling staples such as milk, butter, flour and cooking oil below cost. The agency believes that if the price war continues, this will drive small groceries out of business.
