Mall owners fill gaps with non-retail tenants

Article Abstract:

Shopping center owners throughout the US are seeking non-retail tenants, such as colleges and telemarketers, to occupy space abandoned by failing retail stores. For example, local officials in Greensboro, NC, are negotiating to convert Carolina Circle Mall into a community college campus. Since spring 2000, the under-performing Montgomery Ward and Co Inc has been the mall's only tenant. Also, Carousel Mall in San Bernardino, CA, which has lost two anchor tenants that include Montgomery Ward, has leased 20,000-sq-ft of former retail space to Starwood Hotels for a telemarketing center.
