Article Abstract:

Columbia University psychology professor Robert Krauss has linked physical gestures made during conversations with the ability to remember words. Krauss's tests indicate people move muscles when they attempt to identify a word whose definition he has supplied. Doctors have noticed that stroke patients whose conversational ability has been impaired often gesticulate while talking. Different cultures appear to gesticulate more in conversation than others. Gesticulating patterns depend on language rhythm and word concepts.

New hope, old fears

Article Abstract:

Tamoxifen is the drug that preliminary data suggests would reduce the risk of breast cancer. Among high-risk women in the trial experiments, tamoxifen reduced the incidence of breast cancer by 45%. Scientists were so surprised by the results, they ended the study 14 months ahead of schedule. However, the tamoxifen test results also showed 33 endometrial cancer cases and 17 cases of pulmonary embolism.

AIDS at 20

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented of the status of AIDS, 20 years after awareness was first raised about the plague. In 2001, 36 million people are HIV positive, with up to 900,000 people infected in the United States. AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death, on a global basis.
