AT and T's Liberty Media Group's interactive media subsidiary Liberty Digital will acquire a 50% equity interest in Sony Pictures Entertainment's 24-hour Game Show Network (GSN) for $275 million in cash and stock. The deal is expected to be finalized by Dec 31, 2000. It will enable viewers of the network to participate interactively with the game shows that are broadcasted by GSN through their digital set-top boxes. Jupiter Communications has predicted that roughly 30% of US homes could be using set-top boxes for interactive television, which is a $25-billion industry, by 2005.

Verinigde Nederlandse Uitgeversbedrijven B.V. (NVU) of the Netherlands is buying ACNielsen for $2.3 billion. The deal would make NVU the world's biggest provider of market research services to advertisers and retailers. It will pay $36.75 in cash for every share of ACNielsen, which gathers data on consumer spending and box office sales. The acquisition will reunite ACNielsen with Nielsen Media Research, the US' No 1 TV-rating service, which VNU bought in 1999.
