La Guardia lottery aims to reduce flight delays

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Nov 8, 2000 that it plans to reduce flight delays at New York, NY's La Guardia Airport by holding a lottery to distribute landing rights for new flights. The lottery is an attempt to solve the congestion problem at the airport while implementing a new federal law that mandates that La Guardia allow more airlines and flights. Under the FAA plan, new and small carriers would be the first to be given new landing rights, and new flights would be limited to 150 per day.

FAA targets wires in hard to reach areas

Article Abstract:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Oct. 1, 1998 that it will focus its airline inspections to wiring and other internal systems of aging US airliners. According to FAA Administrator Jane Garvey, the FAA will aim for areas that were not regularly and usually inspected to ensure the safety of wirings and other systems on old airlines. The move is part of FAA's response to the 1997 Gore Commission recommendation that the FAA include nonstructural systems in its program for inspecting aging aircraft.

Hurdles challenge new N.Y. flights

New York, NY, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as the John F. Kennedy and Newark international airports are challenging a law that requires New York's La Guardia Airport and three other airports be opened to more competition. While the law calls for phasing out of landing limits by 2007, it allows airlines to apply for La Guardia land rights immediately. The city of New York, La Guardia owners and neighbors complain that congestion would cause noise and delays.
