Revenues from Alberta's oil and gas industry had resulted in a C$5 billion surplus. Premier Ralph Klein, in speaking before Calgary's Chamber of Commerce, said postsecondary institutions would be receiving C$200 million and energy-rebate cheques would be sent to tax payers and businesses owing to the surplus.

Harris says cheap food means farm aid is fair

Article Abstract:

Ontario Premier Mike Harris has justified the government's policy of farm subsidies by pointing to lower food prices at supermarkets. He announced a new $90 million subsidy for 23,000 growers of oilseeds and grains that will allow Ontario farmers to compete with international agricultural companies.

EDC policy targets greater disclosure

Export Development Corp. (EDC) will conduct more of an effort to make its operations more accessible to the public. EDC, which grants federal loans that enable Canadian companies to secure sales from overseas parties, will still maintain the secrecy of other commercial information.
