Tobacco regulatory bill criticized

Article Abstract:

Public-health advocate groups have criticized a new tobacco-regulation bill as too weak. The bill, authored by Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), has also failed to gain bipartisan support. The legislation will require the Food and Drug Administration to disclose tobacco ingredients and regulate tobacco advertising and sales to children, as well as encourage the development of tobacco products that are less harmful.

US states are expected to decide on an agreement that calls for the country's four biggest tobacco firms to pay $206 billion in the next 25 years. Justices to hear FDA make its case for regulating tobacco

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on whether the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has the authority to regulate cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. The FDA said that tobacco products qualify as "drugs" and "devices" because they contain nicotine, an addictive ingredient that affects the structure or any function of the body. However, the tobacco industry argued that the FDA was never given the right by the Congress the authority to regulate tobacco, which the agency formally asserted in 1996.
