It is observed that the Australia's defence and intelligence services are in crisis because of systematic problems involving culture and accountability, but the most immediate problem is the attempted character assassination of a 49-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Lance Collins. The further explosive charges against the military and its political masters are also considered as factors responsible for it.

Australian Democratic Party leader Meg Lees will have a Senate majority after Jul 1, 1999. She opposes the government of John Howard on economics, health, and other social issues. Although many policymakers emphasized Australia's growing economy, Lees insists the numbers of impoverished Australians are also growing. Lees feels government should not be continually made smaller and weaker.
