Corporate restructuring in Japan may be more gradual in comparison to the US but has become so prevalent an issue that the Japanese have even coined a new word for it: 'ristora.' Goldman Sachs noted that 539 firms listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange have already announced restructuring plans, and analysts say that the fight to become more competitive internationally has resulted in a convergence of forces which is accelerating Corporate Japan's downizing. They include consolidation in the banking sector, more foreign investment, and growing acceptance of downsizingamong firms.

Internet cafes renting personal computers by the minute or hour, estimated at between hundreds and thousands worldwide, have sprung up in places such as Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Cambodia. These cafes, which started in the US in 1995, provides its customer with a number of benefits that include the ease of keeping in touch with one's correspondences, procuring travel information and is a cheaper substitute for hotel e-mail service.

A Japanese trend that has the potential to become global is the integration of the Internet with mobile devices, such as cellular telephones. Japanese wireless giant NTT DoCoMo is probably the most successful company in the world to have ventured in the market for Internet access via a cellular telephone. Its i-mode service has attracted 7.8 million subscribers in just 16 months since it was launched in 1999.
