Incidents give security firms fodder for sales push

Article Abstract:

Attacks by criminals on major Internet World Wide Web sites on the week of Feb 7, 2000-Feb 13, 2000, have been beneficial for companies that provide Internet security. Internet companies have reported that their offices have been besieged by waves of calls from security consultancies, software firms and insurers, all of whom are pitching new tools which they say can prevent crippling outages. Security experts say that while some of these products can help mitigate attacks by vandals, there is no single foolproof solution. They noted that some security tools which may help Internet firms include firewalls, intrusion detection software, detectors, filters and rerouting.

Internet firm Cisco topples Microsoft as world's No. 1

Article Abstract:

Cisco Systems Inc has surpassed Microsoft Corp to become the world's most valuable company in a development that reflects the significance and pervasiveness of the Internet in the US economy. Cisco was valued at $555 billion at the NASDAQ stock exchange on Mar 27, 2000, while Microsoft was valued at $542 billion. Cisco manufactures equipment which routes traffic across the Internet. Microsoft's market value has declined in the wake of its antitrust case with the federal government.

Beware comparison Web sites

Article Abstract:

Comparison shopping sites offer information on the best prices for online shopers who are overwhelmed by the number of Internet retail stores. However, comparison Web site may not be objective in the information that they provide to online shoppers. Many comparison sites such as Cnet, America Online Inc and Go Network search only online stores that pay to be on their listing, while others such as MySimon.com do exhaustive search but give premium placement to paying companies.
