Article Abstract:

Support for Pauline Hanson's One Nation party continues to grow in Australia while the Liberal and National parties struggle to maintain the Federal Coalition's nine Senate seats in a double dissolution. Prime Minister John Howard favors the Coalition because once the Coalition is reelected it may pass the Wik legislation. However, calling for a double dissolution would be political suicide, according to polls.

The Australian constitutional convention has been a small step in its journey to republican status. Advocates believe that a system of presidential election can be in place within five years. Furthermore, opponents note that a "yes" vote for the 1999 referendum is unlikely to succeed without the support of the prime minister John Howard.

Associated issues were also discussed such as Australia's adoption of a new preamble to the Constitution or bill of rights.
