A growing number of economy, midprice and luxury hotels are offering free high-speed Internet access to gain advantage over their competitors in attracting guests. For example, guests at Suburban Lodges, Jameson Inns and Signature Inns can connect their laptops to the Internet for free beginning in late May 2000. Likewise, Wyndham Hotel Co Ltd's ByRequest frequent-guest program and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts' 419 guest rooms offer complimentary high-speed access to the Internet.

Trendy decor, whimsical amenities and unusual services, such as tarot card readings and in-room sound machines that reproduce sea waves, are increasingly becoming standard features in a growing number of boutique hotels. These moderately-priced hotels, with rates between $65 to $130, place the same emphasis on style and decor made famous by the Starwood, W Hotels and Hotel Monacos brands. Among these boutique hotels are The Grafton in West Hollywood, CA; The Wave Hotel in Miami Beach; and Hotel Del Sol, San Francisco, CA.

Intense competition between Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons have forced the two luxury hotel chains to tinker with their formats and services. Ritz- Carlton has done away with public-space furnishings such as floral wingbacked chairs and mahogany coffee tables. Its hotel in Wolfsburg, Germany displays Ritz-Carlton's new look, with solid gray suede-covered chairs and side tables of chrome.
