Article Abstract:
Hotel room rates are falling in many cities due to the oversupply in the number of hotel rooms. Since 1997, the hotel industry has added almost half a million hotel rooms while another 148,000 rooms will be added in 2000. Demand is not increasing prompting hotels to reduce their rates. Rates have been cut in Dallas and Seattle while hotels in Phoenix have improved their packages. Analysts have forecasted that hotel construction would slow down in early 2000. The hotel industry as a whole is experiencing declining occupancy rates.
