MidWest politicians and consumers alike are vociferously protesting pump prices of ethanol gasoline that reached $2.35 a gallon in Jun 2000. The situation has resurrected skepticism about the practicality of ethanol as a smog-cutting, pollution-reducing fuel additive and has also raised the issue about prices consumers are willing to pay for cleaner air. Chicago, IL, and Milwaukee, WI, are the only areas in the US that are exclusively using new reformulated gasoline, RFG-2, which contains 10% ethanol to meet existing national clean-air standards. Yet they are the two areas charging the highest gasoline prices in the US.
