The US Supreme Court on Jun 25, 2001 ruled 7-2 that publishers cannot automatically put printed articles by freelance writers in electronic databases. The ruling requires newspapers and magazines to ask for special permission to reproduce articles written by freelancer writers in electronic databases--including Lexis-Nexis--and on CD-ROMs. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said in a decision that 'both the print publishers and the electronic publishers...have infringed the copyrights of the freelance authors.'

CBS Inc's officials said on Oct 24, 2000 the company paid $8 million to settle a class-action sex-discrimination lawsuit filed by 200 female technical employees. Filed in 1996, the lawsuit alleged that CBS discriminated against its female technicians at its television stations in Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI, Green Bay, WI, Los Angeles, CA, Minneapolis, MN, and New York, NY. CBS admitted no liability or wrongdoing in the settlement, which is subject to approval by a federal judge.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals has been accused of conspiring with the American Psychiatric Assn and others to create a novel medical diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The lawsuit accused that everybody from the shrinks, the drug company and the schools makes money on the diagnosis and the fear that it incurs among parents. In a statement, Novartis denied the allegations as unfounded and preposterous.
