Gareth Evans, former foreign minister who has become a statesman of the Australian Labor Party, has proved to be the electoral liability his colleagues feared he might become. He has been accused of "deficit deceit" and was criticized for his mistake regarding the size of the budget "black hole" in 1996. Evans admits his transition to opposition has been difficult.
