Australian coal companies in early 1999 accepted price cuts of between 15% and 20% with their biggest customers, the Japanese, which will have disastrous effects in the industry and in mining communities. Coal industry consultant Richard Koerner says Japanese steel companies have underpaid Australian coal suppliers by $10 bil since 1970, and blames the practice of annual price negotiation for the current crisis.
