Article Abstract:
The correlation between sex and cervical cancer was suspected since the 1840s, but a conclusive link between cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) transmitted through sexual activity was established only in the 1980s. Several efforts to develop vaccines took place over the years, till the Gardasil vaccine was developed in 2005 and recommended in 2006 for childhood immunization.

Article Abstract:
Gardasil, a vaccine that prevents infections from human papillomavirus (HPV), which cause cervical cancer, has raised a controversy. Several states want to make the HPV vaccine mandatory for preteen school girls, but conservative groups say that protection from these vaccines would encourage inappropriate sexual activity and also undermine parental autonomy over their children.

Article Abstract:
Gardasil is a vaccine developed for combating a sexually transmitted disease (STD) associated with cancer. It is hoped that informed knowledge of the link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer would win public approval for the vaccine, overriding any reservations about HPV being sexually transmitted.
