Gates testimony promises to stay at center of case

Microsoft CEO Bill Gates' testimony is expected to stay at center of the antitrust suit filed by the government against the software company. The government succeeded in convincing Judge Thomas Penfield, who oversees the trial, of denying Microsoft's request to stop the release of Gates' videotaped pre-trial testimony to broadcasters. The video will help government prosecutors paint Gates as the brains behind Microsoft's allegedly anticompetitive practice. Gates said he does not remember sending or receiving memos that dwell on Microsoft's efforts to convince Apple to weaken Netscape's browser and Sun's Java programming language.

Microsoft's antitrust violations lawsuit has been partly dropped by the District of Columbia as well as twenty states have in May 1998. The states had charged Microsoft for illegal inducements and threats by forcing its Internet browser software and Officer word processing application on computers makers and consumers. The states have dropped the charge on Microsoft's pricing policies for its Office software. Microsoft will be tried in October 1998 on illegal marketing practices for its browser and operating system.

Microsoft has announced plans to integrate the Windows operating system in entertainment systems and other devices that have PC and Internet linkage. This move by software companies will cushion the impact generated by investors on PC manufacturers' stocks.
