Foundry Network, a Sunnyvale, CA-based maker of high-speed network switches, is the best performing initial public offering (IPO) in 1999, with a 525% first-day gain. The company, which sold 9% of its shares at $25 per share, beat other Internet-related IPOs, including ITXC, Medscape and Freeshop. Differentiating Foundry from other Internet-related IPOs is its earnings of $3.3 million for the first half of 1999, compared with a loss of $4.2 million from the same year-ago period.

The competition in the home video game industry is expected to be very tight as the market is expected to grow rapidly. Anaysts expect more than 150 million video game systems will be sold worldwide over the next few years. As of 2000, Sony Corp leads the industry and seemed to have strengthened its grip with the successful release of the new PlayStation 2. Companies that have a good chance of displacing Sony from its top position are Sega, Microsoft Corp and Nintendo.

Microsoft Corp has announced the possibility that it might fail to meet earnings and revenue forecasts by about 5% for both the December 2000 quarter and 12 months ending June 30, 2001. The software manufacturer cited the weak global economy, the drop in personal computer sales and soft corporate technology expenditure as reasons for the possible failure to meet the firm's financial targets.
