Ticket prices of both US and European airlines in 2000 are about the same as they were in 1999 with few new discounts. For example, a round-trip fare on Air France between Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Paris stayed the same at $851. However, a round-trip fare on United Air Lines Inc between Los Angeles International Airport and Frankfurt, Germany, decreased from $1,483 in 1999 to $1,387 in 2000. With the strengthening market, carriers are expected not to reduce fares as sharply as they did in 1999.

Northwest Airlines has abandoned its strategy of blocking airfare hikes, as it continued negotiations with its pilots union to beat an Aug. 29, 1998 strike deadline. The airline, which resisted industrywide fare hikes on seven-14- and 21-day tickets since April 1998 due to fears that an Air Line Pilots Association strike might scare passengers away, has increased its fares on Aug. 18, 1998. Northwest ould not comment on its fare action, but Airfare-Report.com Editor Terry Trippler said the move could mean that the airline is concocting a big sale to lure fliers who are deterred by fear of a strike.

United Air Lines Inc's Economy Plus project provides business travelers, the carrier's most loyal clients, as much as six inches more legroom in coach class. The move is effected by pulling out one row of seats from the economy-class sections in around 450 aircraft in its fleet in the US, instead of broadening its first-class section. The Economy Plus seats will be alloted in advance to United's Premier Mileage Plus members, but the seats can also be availed by travelers who purchase full-fare economy tickets.
