Article Abstract:

The commission investigating the Somalia scandal issued its final report in Jul 1997. The report found that the Canadian military and government tried to coverup misdeeds committed by Canadian soldiers in Somalia. Unfortunately, there was little public reaction to the charges made in the report.

Maclean's reporters Stevie Cameron and Mary Janigan were subpoenaed in Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's $50 million libel suit against the Canadian government. As a result, the editorial staff of Maclean's has received numerous questions and unwanted attention from news media.

The 1996 Maclean's rankings reveal that Canadian universities are operating with fewer resources and that students are demanding a utilitarian curriculum. Traditional subjects are losing ground to technical and engineering studies.
